STAR TREK VI - THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY
-----------------------------------------
NEWS UPDATE by Simon Plumbe
-----------------------------
First the plot. The RUMOURED story for the film is that the Enterprise is
transporting a Klingon dignitary from one place to another. During the
voyage, the Klingon is killed and Kirk and McCoy are blamed. They are sent to
a prison colony and Spock is left in charge of the Enterprise. Spock then
continues the diplomatic mission while trying to clear Kirk and McCoy.
The film, unlike the others, is set several YEARS after it's predecessor and
it is a totally independant story. With STAR TREK II to STAR TREK V, there
was only a duration of about a year from the beginning of 2 to the end of 5.
At least now, the characters ages and the actors ages will be a little bit
closer together!
The film is written and directed by Nicholas Meyer (Director of STAR TREK II
and co-writer for STAR TREK IV), with special effects by Industrial Light &
Magic. The film has a reputed budget of $25 million. Filming lasted for just
over three months, from the middle of April to the beginning of July.
However, even though the budget was restricted to $25 million, it is believed
that the producers were able to get more for their money than before. One way
they saved money was by having the film co-produced by Industrial Light and
Magic which saved money on the special effects!
The cast include all the regulars, Todd Bryant (Klaa from STAR TREK V)
returning as another Klingon with supposedly more Klingon dialogue than
anyone else has EVER had in a TREK film, David Warner (St. John Talbot from
STAR TREK V), this time playing a high-ranking Klingon, John Shuck returns as
the Klingon Ambassador from STAR TREK IV, Mark Lenard returns as Sarek, Grace
Lee Whitney is back as Janice Rand, Christopher Plummer appears as a
high-ranking Klingon (complete with eye-patch, BOLTED on to his head!),
TNG extra Guy Vardaman as a Klingon Gunner (still no dialogue!) and Michael
Dorn as a Klingon (He IS playing Worf's grandfather! Presumably, it will be
mentioned in the two-part Spock story in Season 5 of THE NEXT GENERATION. In
TREK VI, his character's name is Colonel Worf and he is supposed to be the
Klingon equivalent of a Defence Lawyer!!!). The cast also includes Rosanna De
Soto (as a Klingon), Kim Catrall (playing a Vulcan called Valeris) and a
cameo appearance from Christian Slater. The rumours about Whoopi Goldberg and
Jack Palance appearing were true, but Whoopi pulled out at the last minute as
did Jack (his role was rumoured to have been taken by David Warner).
It will be an action film with a running time of about 2 hours. It is set,
like previous Nick Meyer films, in several locations including a couple of
alien worlds, in space, on the Enterprise etc.
At the end of the film, the crew will be split up, making sure that this will
be the last film. Sulu will take command of the Excelsior, which plays a
MAJOR role in the film. As far as I know, Sulu will have command of the
Excelsior all through the film and his Communications Officer will be Janice
Rand, again played by Grace Lee Whitney!
None of the cast die, Kirk does NOT become a monk and Spock does NOT get
married. These were rumours started off by Nicholas Meyer to annoy the fans!
However, during filming, Paramount actually put EXTRA money into the film
because they were impressed with what they saw and there are rumours going
around that Paramount want to make a seventh! It is also rumoured that all
the cast enjoyed filming so much that they ALL want to return. If that's
true, and the film makes a reasonable amount of money, then we will almost
certainly see a STAR TREK VII, probably in 1993/4. This will also probably
see the extension, by a year or so, of THE NEXT GENERATION as it would be
unlikely that Paramount would produce TWO film series.
The film is schedules for release in America on Friday December 13th and on
14th February 1992 in the U.K.
The bulk of the information in this article was provided by Paramount's STAR
TREK Research Consultants, Richard Arnold and Guy Vardaman and Tobias
Richter.
